qathet Canoe Route Enhancement
GRANT: $17,600
The qathet Canoe Route is one of B.C.’s premier wilderness paddling journeys. Located in the qathet Regional District, this 57 km freshwater route winds through a series of lakes, campsites, and forest trails surrounded by soaring mountains, rainforest, and wetlands. Built over 40 years ago, it remains one of only three wilderness paddle trails in the province, drawing thousands of locals and visitors each year for both multi-day expeditions and shorter day trips.
The qathet Canoe Route Portage Enhancement Project focused on improving safety, accessibility, and sustainability. In total, the Powell River Educational Society built three bridges (25 m), rehabilitated 2.5 km of trail, repaired 15 m of boardwalks, and removed 17 danger trees, ensuring this iconic route remains a safe, sustainable, and inspiring destination for generations to come.
