Impact Measurement Pilot Project

ORCBC is piloting a project to measure the impact of the non-profit outdoor recreation sector in BC. The pilot measures key indicators that capture the sector’s contributions to infrastructure, environmental stewardship, volunteerism, engagement, organizational capacity, collaborations, reconciliation and inclusion.

Why

ORCBC will create a data dashboard and report summarizing key results. By gathering consistent, credible data across organizations, we will be better positioned to:

  • Demonstrate the collective impact of outdoor recreation on community wellbeing, volunteerism, public health, and local economies

  • Strengthen our case for investment and policy support with government and funders

  • Identify trends, gaps, and opportunities to better support member organizations

  • Tell a stronger, evidence-based story about the value of the work happening across the province

Outdoor recreation groups can use the data in their advocacy efforts, funding applications, when seeking partners and sponsors, and in communications with their community.

Who

Invited organizations will submit their data along a list of key performance indicators (KPIs). For the pilot, invitations will be extended to ORCBC members and affiliates of provincial member organizations.

When

If you received an invitation, please submit your metrics by May 31, 2026. Results will be shared in July.

All submissions will be entered in a draw for a  1-day trail workshop or 10 km worth of inspection within one trail network (at the winner’s discretion). Thank you to McElhanney for the generous donation.

How it Works

If you have been invited to submit your metrics, you have two options:

1. Through our reporting form (preferred): Please review the KPI Reporting Guide to preview the KPIs, their purpose, and examples. When you are ready, please have one person from your organization enter the metrics in the reporting form below. All KPIs are optional. Please report as many as you can. It is fine if you only have the data of a few KPIs.

2. Via email: If you have any AGM or meeting slides, report cards, sponsorship packages, or notes summarizing your performance and impact, you are welcome to send them to Tomke Augustin, grants@orcbc.ca with the subject line “Impact Data Project”. These numbers could include the total km of your managed trail network, your membership numbers, stewardship efforts, and more. Two good examples are the AGM slides of the Hope Mountain Centre for Outdoor Learning, where impact measures are sprinkled throughout, and the sponsorship webpage of the Fraser Valley Mountain Bike Association.

Next steps

ORCBC will share the results in July on a data dashboard, a report, and on social media. You can use the results in your advocacy efforts, funding applications, when seeking partners and sponsors, and in communications with your community.

After that, we will conduct a pilot evaluation with recommendations for future impact measurement.
