Webinar: Dene K’éh Kusān — Indigenous-Led Land Stewardship, IPCAs, and Recreation

Learn about the Kaska Dene vision for land stewardship in Northern BC.

The Kaska Dene have an ambitious and forward-looking vision for stewarding the lands and waters of northern British Columbia, one that includes outdoor recreation as a valued and compatible use. This vision is known as Dene K’éh Kusān, meaning “Always Will Be There.”

For ORCBC’s January webinar, representatives from the Kaska Nation and the Dena Kayeh Institute will share their vision for land stewardship across approximately 3.9 million hectares, nearly 10% of northern B.C., within the B.C. Kaska Ancestral Territory. They will explore how Indigenous-led conservation, land use planning, and recreation can align in practice.

What you’ll learn

This webinar will provide insight into:

  • The modernized land use planning process in British Columbia

  • The Kaska vision for the Dene K’éh Kusān Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA)

  • Co-management and Guardian stewardship models

  • Why and how outdoor recreation aligns with Kaska values, laws, and stewardship goals

  • Ways the recreation community can engage constructively and respectfully

The Kaska Nation is one of four Nations currently engaged in modernized land use planning processes in northern B.C. Their work is part of a broader shift underway across the province, with nine land-use planning processes and more than a dozen proposed IPCAs underway. This webinar offers a valuable opportunity to hear directly from a Nation leading this work and to better understand the implications for outdoor recreation.
