Picnic in the Park
GRANT: $5,000
Led by Metro Vancouver Regional Parks Foundation, Picnic in the Park 2025 was a free, family-friendly event that introduced New Canadian and BIPOC families to outdoor recreation in a welcoming environment. Hosted in June at Surrey Bend Regional Park, the event helps break down barriers such as safety concerns, lack of experience, and language challenges through guided nature walks, hands-on demonstrations, and multilingual resources. Organized in partnership with NatureKids BC, CTS Youth Society, S.U.C.C.E.S.S., MOSAIC, and others, the event provides transportation, culturally relevant food options, and interactive learning opportunities to ensure everyone feels supported in exploring B.C.’s natural spaces.
Many families who attended last year shared that it was their first time visiting a regional or provincial park, highlighting the importance of accessible entry points into outdoor recreation. By creating positive first experiences, Picnic in the Park encourages lifelong connections to nature, strengthens environmental stewardship, and models how inclusive outdoor programs can be replicated across the province for the benefit of future generations.
