Our goal on this workhike is to improve the Phelix Hut Trail. This trail was built on the territory of Lil'wat Nation by VOCers between 2007 and 2014 through much sweat and ingenuity. Recently, it has fallen into disrepair as the area has been off-limits due to logging. We went back last year to restore the trail, which is now once again useable. Much work still needs to be done on the trail though for it to be truly accessable. Our work will allow generations of future VOCers to continue enjoying the hut.
There is lots of work to be done so we will stay in the area for four nights. The plan is to go up early in the morning on June 5th and come back June 9th. We might be able to arrange for some people to just be there for the weekend, or a shorter amount of time. If the weather looks really bad we could delay slightly, that decision would be made at the pre-trip meeting. The dates area also subject to change due to other factors.
The pre-trip meeting will be Thursday, May 28 at 5 pm in the VOC Clubroom (in the Nest). At the meeting, we'll discuss who's going, trip logistics, and the work to be done.
We will be camping in tents at various spots on the road and/or trail. Previous backcountry camping experience is not required. There is a risk of landslides along the road that increases after heavy rain. We'll keep an eye on the forecast and cancel the trip if lots of precipitation is expected. There is also a significant population of grizzlies living in the area, so we'll practice bear awareness and safety. Helpful skills to know include knowing how to use a chainsaw, or having experience with any of the tasks above! With that said, no prior skills are necessary.
