Kitimat River Cleanup

  • Riverlodge Recreeation and Fitness Centre 654 West Columbia Avenue Kitimat, BC, V8C 1V5 Canada (map)

Lead organization: Kitimat Understanding the Environment

The Kitimat River Clean‑Up community volunteers gathered along the riverbank, working together to remove debris and restore the area.

It is an annual community-driven cleanup event organized by Kitimat Understanding the Environment (KUTE), in partnership with the District of Kitimat and LNG Canada, inviting local residents to help restore the natural beauty of the Kitimat River.

Volunteers work along the riverbanks to collect garbage and any debris left as a result of fishing or riverbank use. Large items are documented and collected later by truck or machine.

The initiative highlights waste management issues and aims to educate the public about the lifecycle of materials and responsible disposal practices.

Held each fall, with the 2025 event taking place on Saturday, September 13, kicking off at the Kitimat Riverlodge.

In 2024, approximately 70 volunteers participated, ranging from toddlers to adults.

Pre-registration is encouraged to facilitate area assignments and event coordination, though walk-ins are also welcome.

Volunteers are assigned specific riverbank zones for cleanup. Participants are advised to dress appropriately and bring reusable mugs for hot chocolate and home-baked treats provided post-cleanup. The cleanup underscores the importance of community engagement in environmental stewardship. It not only helps keep the Kitimat River clean, but also strengthens local connections and environmental awareness.
