What he talked about
Pitt unpacked AllTrails’ Public Lands Program, a free platform designed for land managers, trail organizations and non-profit. It bridges the gap between crowd-sourced app data and the organizations that are on the ground managing and maintaining trails. It allows them to edit what the app users see and read, including sending important alerts and information, and access anonymized visitor use data and use information. The AllTrails Stewards Fund grant closes on July 17. Apply now for part of $500,000 it will doll out this year.https://publiclands.alltrails.com/stewards-fund

Public Lands Program
It’s a three year old program that evolved from the gap between the growth in outdoor recreation participation and the need for resources to respond to the increasing trail use. AllTrails recognized they wouldn’t have a business without the people on the ground building and maintaining trails and it was in their best interest to support them because their reputation is built on reliable, accurate trail information. Free resource to support trail managers to do their job more efficiently. Creates a back end into AllTrails data for land managers and collaborators to access information about AllTrails use on local trails.
Because the app is so popular it is a good proxy for understanding trends.
900 land managers using the platform, including about 30 in Canada.
3 benefits:
Understand how visitors use trails
Manage trail information to help visitors recreate responsibility
Connect with AllTrails users to share timely alerts and information
How it works:
Sign up: land managers and trail organizations apply to join the program at publiclands.alltrails.com. There is no cost.
Connect with Impact Team: once your organization is approved, the Impact Team will connect to support your efforts.
Explore the dashboard: It has several features, including a list of each trail in your management area, use stats on each trail, heat maps to see how trail users are using the trail system, and the option to set up alerts and communicate with users viewing specific trails.
Gain insights: The first step Pitt recommends is to review your top five or 10 trails. Validate the information on each one, read the reviews and see where that leads you.
Examples of how land managers are using it:
There are many ways to use the platform and AllTrails shares several examples of many examples at https://publiclands.alltrails.com/case-studies
