Webinar: Recreation’s role in ensuring tourism is a force for good

Tourism is an economic driver and often makes communities better places to live. The outdoor recreation community plays an important part in the tourism industry by building, maintaining and promoting opportunities for outdoor recreation. But there are challenges to having too much tourism, including not having the capacity, resources, amenities and infrastructure to effectively manage all the users. The tourism industry in BC is increasingly looking to meet those challenges and wants to work with the outdoor recreation community to do so.

This is the focus of the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC’s May webinar: “Recreation’s role in making tourism a force for good”.

A panel discussion will explain the ongoing shift in the tourism industry from a marketing focus to visitor management and the role for outdoor recreation in shaping tourism in communities across B.C. We’ll hear from Destination BC about its regenerative tourism strategies and from Tourism Fernie about initiatives like its AmbassadorWild Program, which encourages sustainable recreation.

Attendees can expect to learn about what regenerative tourism means, why outdoor recreation is an important component of sustainable tourism, and how tourism and outdoor recreation can collaborate more effectively.

Panelists include:

  • Erica Hummel, Director of Destination Development and Stewardship, Destination BC

  • Jikke Gyorki, Executive Director, Tourism Fernie

  • Melanie Wrigglesworth, Executive Director, Fernie Trails Alliance
